Partial close in MT5 and MT4: banking part of the profit
Updated 13 October 2026
A partial close banks some profit now and leaves the rest working. Here is how to do it in MetaTrader and what limits the broker sets.
Why close in parts
- Lock in profit at the first target and take the pressure off.
- Leave a runner for a big move under a trailing stop.
- Exit at several levels instead of guessing one.
By hand in MetaTrader
- Double-click the position in the Trade tab.
- Enter the volume to close (for example, half) in the Volume field.
- Press Close. The rest keeps working with the same stop and target.
Limits
- Minimum lot. A 0.01 position cannot be closed partially. Both the closed part and the remainder must be at least the minimum lot and a multiple of the step.
- Netting accounts (MT5): one position per symbol; a partial close is a deal in the opposite direction for part of the volume.
- FIFO at US brokers: positions must be closed oldest first.
Popular schemes
- 50% at 1R, the rest to breakeven and trailing.
- Three parts at three targets: 1R, 2R, 3R.
- Close half before a major news release.

Partial close in TradeDeck
The 25% and 50% buttons on the panel and next to a position on the chart close a share in one click (greyed out when the share is below the minimum lot). The Partial tab sets up to 10 closing levels — in points, price, R or percent; the levels show on the chart and can be dragged. From the phone you can also close 25%, 50% or 75%.
